HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START

Through our Head Start and Early Head Start programs, we work with children (ages 0 – 5) and their families to provide the skills, confidence and stable home life necessary for a smooth transition into kindergarten and beyond. Children also receive a broad array of health services including screenings and referrals, maintenance of immunization schedules, nutrition assessments and follow-ups, mental health assessments as part of initial screenings, and determination if any developmental or physical delays are present. Children receive health and dental services and have access to ongoing and acute and routine health and dental care. Enrolled children receive healthy meals, along with an assessment of their nutritional needs and the necessary follow-ups. Nutrition education is available for parents and incorporated into daily classroom activities for the children.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the nutrition services program. Services being provided will include, establishing effective methods of meeting the nutritional needs of children, rendering services and resources required by the performance standards, licensing, and program regulations in addition to providing/promoting health education within the agency.

Specific duties include:

  • With the help of the Nutrition Program Manager, creates and develops nutrition plans and assessments, and conducts trainings and meetings with designated staff in order to implement the Nutrition program for VOALA Head Start, Early Head Start, and other Children Services programs.
  • Oversees and approves all menus and ensures they meet USDA guidelines. Works with kitchen staff on menu/recipe planning, transport/temperature logs and kitchen functions.
  • Provides comprehensive nutrition services to include recommendations in health and dental care, as well as nutrition to children and families.
  • Provides children and families with direct links and connects children and families to needed services or resources out in the community.
  • Maintains dietary records for Nutrition Program, compiles and submits reports for program and funder requirements, and monitors files.
  • Maintains up to date procedures in line with health trends and program needs which includes creating and monitoring incidental medical service plans and trainings.
  • Maintains up to date client data, nutrition records, and growth assessments while ensuring confidentiality.
  • Travels to sites, collaborates effectively with others in a multidisciplinary approach and encourages a team environment.
  • Provides staff training to promote continuous improvement and assist staff development
  • Attends funder required meetings and trainings, and prepares and conducts meetings with parent
  • Other duties as may be needed to fulfill program requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
  • Proof at the time of hire
    • Must have health examination at the time of employment and verification of a T.B. clearance issued within six (6) months prior to employment, renewed when required.
    • Annual Influenza vaccination (between Aug 1 – Dec 1)
    • Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunization
  • Ability to interact with children in a very busy environment; therefore, must be physically able to perform lifting (50 lbs.), squatting/kneeling, and move quickly.
  • In order to make home visits and travel to different school sites, offices, etc., must have access to an automobile with adequate insurance coverage and a valid California driver’s license, or have means to other easily accessible transportation.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics or a closely related pediatric field.

EXPERIENCE

  • Two years of experience in nutrition related fields.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in nutrition, Public Health, or related field.
  • Work experience in Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
  • Experience with Child plus, UltiPro, and Acorn
  • Knowledge of nutrition, dietary, and allergy education.
  • Knowledge of USDA AND CACFP regulations.
  • Knowledge of menu planning, recipe development and nutrient analysis of food
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or other language i.e. Armenian or Farsi.
