HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START

Through our Head Start and Early Head Start programs, we work with children (ages 0 – 5) and their families to provide the skills, confidence and stable home life necessary for a smooth transition into kindergarten and beyond. Children also receive a broad array of health services including screenings and referrals, maintenance of immunization schedules, nutrition assessments and follow-ups, mental health assessments as part of initial screenings, and determination if any mental or physical delays are present. Children receive health and dental services and have access to ongoing and acute and routine health and dental care. Enrolled children receive healthy meals, along with an assessment of their nutritional needs and the necessary follow-ups. Nutrition education is available for parents and incorporated into daily classroom activities for the children.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Nutrition Tech II works with program coordinators and management to administer food orders and menus for clients and to supervise food preparation and cooking; ensures safe food handling, proper records. This position provides collaborative planning in conjunction with other support groups and agencies in meeting needs of families.

Nutrition Program Tasks:

  • Under the direction of the Nutrition Supervisor, plans the nutrition program in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards; maintains production records, meal counts and menus in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards;
  • Monitor assigned sites for compliance with USDA/Child and Adult Care Food Program regulations. Ensures all Head Start / EHS students receive one to two-thirds of their daily nutritional needs through meals served at school;
  • Provide technical assistance for site staff regarding meals;
  • Maintain continuing education in the areas of Nutrition, Head Start performance standards, and USDA regulations.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
  • Proof at the time of hire
  • TB clearance within 6 months prior
    • Annual Influenza vaccination (between Aug 1 – Dec 1)
    • Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunization
    • Health screening at the time of employment
  • Requires ability to interact with children in a busy environment including, but not limited to:
    • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Frequently kneel and squat
    • Ability to move quickly
  • California driver’s license, or have means to other easily accessible transportation.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics or a closely related pediatric field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two years of experience in nutrition-related fields.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in nutrition, Public Health, or related field.
  • Work experience in Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
  • Knowledge in pediatric, prenatal, and lactation health/nutrition concerns.
  • Knowledge of USDA, AND, and CACFP regulations.
  • Knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft word, Child Plus, Ultipro, and Acorn
  • Bilingual English and Spanish (written and verbal).
